The Golden Retriever is the classic family companion. The breed was developed in Scotland, at the highland estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks.
History of Golden Retriever
The history of this breed goes back to the end of the 18th century; when the hunters of the United Kingdom (originally the Scots), were in the task of finding the ideal dog for their days of hunting.
Dudley Marjoribanks a scrupulous and detailed man who had dedicated himself for several decades to breed crossings after a documented and orderly breeding program; managed to find a dog that fulfilled all abilities what the hunters needed.
He acquired the only yellow puppy in a litter of black wavy-coated retrievers in 1865 and named him Nous, which is Greek for “wisdom.”
Nous grew into a sturdy dog recognizable as a Golden.
It was then, he included in his experiment breeds that today, for the most part, are extinct; among them, the retriever (traditional hunting dog), the Irish setter, the Tweed Spaniel (notable for its activity in the water); as a result, giving thus, origin to the Golden Retriever (that is known nowadays) approximately in the year 1889.
Golden Retrievers first came to the United States in the early 1900s and immediately became popular. The American Kennel Club registered its first Golden Retriever in 1925.
